Interesting post, I like how you did research and presented information and anecdotes from other sources. One of your quotes suggests that in addition to the psychosocial problems we have already learned about and might logically think lead to PIU (depression, boredom, shyness), being bright could also be a factor. I wonder if this is true, and if so, why? Your article is consistent with Caplan’s theory in the sense that PIU seems to be more the consequence of perceived social inadequacies, not necessarily the reality. I am not surprised to learn that parents have had to try and bribe kids to stop playing games, or that a teen pulled a knife on his father over threat of computer removal; I’ve read stories about how players of games like World of Warcraft have died as a result of just sitting in front of their computer for days straight. For many, it would seem that the virtual reality and community that games provide are more real and important than what the outside world has to offer.
